I could not believe my ears when the ESPN sports commentator announced that Shaquille O'Neal was traded to the Phoenix Suns for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks. Two years removed from an NBA championship, Shaq is moving again. Yes, heat is a sad 9-40 but these standards are quite high – after trading someone winning the championship just two seasons. That's something hard. But again, if the price is right, in this case, Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks, do your business happen.
So who is this good deal for? Well, that's good for both teams, but maybe not how you think:
Suns: For the Suns, this trade is good for the immediate future. I think D'Antoni and Steve Nash Coangelo are thinking that only has a few good years in him before it starts to go south, and want to win a championship before that happens. So they bring in Shaq, that in the immediate future can help the Suns. Shaq still has a little left in that old, worn-out body of his contribution in the playoffs.
To Phoenix to finally compete with the great West, which actually need a great center of far-reaching. Shaq is just that. Moreover, with the whole Shaq vs. Kobe drama rearing its ugly head again, Shaq may have a chip on his shoulder. A 7-foot, 350 pounds-room with something to prove Fame is a dangerous thing. If the Suns' only goal is winning a championship this year or maybe the next trade was a good idea. Without But as for the long term, this trade was stupid. Shaq will be gone in a couple of years and now Marion is gone too.
Heat: Warmth, this was a very good deal. One that can save their season as Shawn Marion is sure to revive a Miami team very demoralized. Since his championship, the Heat have gone downhill, say the least. I do not think any team has fallen from grace as quickly as the heat have. Two years ago, they were the best team in basketball. Now, they are worst, which beat out by the likes of the Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks. But now that Marion is in Miami, the Heat will get a full dose of what they have needed throughout the season – the energy and defense. Wade and company will be able to score enough points to win games. But the question is whether they can put whatever enough of a defensive effort to avoid beat all parties.
Moreover, not only will help Marion this season, but he's the type of player can build a strong team around. With it, Haslem and Wade in Miami, the Heat will straighten the ship.
So, I would say that for the short term, the Suns made a good trade. However, the heat is definitely the best of this transaction as Marion and Banks will help in the short term and long term.
