In 2007, the Dallas Cowboys were the talk of Texas to the divisional playoffs, where they lost to the Giants that would win the Super Bowl. This was ironic given that defeated the Giants in their two regular-season clashes. What can you say? Deserved is so hard to swallow as Texas Tabasco sauce. However, the Cowboys had much to be proud of in 2007, ending his season with a 13-3 record. Will 2008 be the Cowboys to Super Bowl again? Before you start screaming and flip hats in the air, consider first a very telling sign: the draft 2008. What was the thinking of Dallas this year?
The Cowboys elected six players for the draft 2008, including Arkansas running back Felix Jones, cornerback Mike Jenkins from South Florida, tight end Martellus Bennett Texas A & M, running back Tashard Choice of Georgia, cornerback Orlando Scandrick and Boise State defensive end Erik Walden Middle Tennessee. Thanks to the draft trade made a year and a half ago, the Cowboys had two first round picks this season and the media began to speculate what the team's strategy would be. Experts were not disappointed, but more aware of team's cautious approach. They resisted the election of a flashy player and instead focused in strengthening its roster, which had played well last season.
Critics pointed out that none of the draft picks the team really be considered starting material. Jerry Jones, owner resisted going all out this season, even away from the superstar Darren McFadden as courtship the cost was simply considered too. However, Dallas did well in terms of filling some holes. Julius Jones is replaced with Felix Jones in a move that was largely predictable. While Felix Jones did not have the flash of other players from Dallas could have asked, he remains a great talent and he may now join a game as a runner, receiver and return man.
Another controversial measure was the Dallas trade a few points to acquire Mike Jenkins, a beloved player in the draft, and indeed evaluated by the team as the # 2 cornerback. Filling the role of cornerback was one of the most crucial needs of Dallas as the aging Anthony Henry and Pacman Jones is not reliable at this point in his career. Martellus Bennett has been submitted to replace Anthony Fasano and a great find. This is the kind of athlete that the major leagues right cut high school, which says something about Dallas's eyes to new talent.
All in all, the consensus among fans and NFL experts was that the drafting efforts were cunning Dallas. They filled the needs of its first two first-round picks, but disappointed others with their head, scratching selections of players like Tashard Choice. Some experts still see a problem in the offensive and defensive lines of the team. While some have seen this attitude of caution as evidence that Dallas is doing everything right so far (hard to debate after 2007 is to improve performance), others are left wondering if the game strategy has changed. While the Dallas project has divided the fans, no one can deny that Dallas is one of the teams most likely to upset the 2008 season.
