Despite some obvious shortcomings, 91, director and writer Arthur Laurents has shown that you can not kill a masterpiece. This masterpiece goes to West Side Story. The score by Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents letters', based on lines Romeo and Juliet in general, still has the power to give you chills and draw you into the love story between two rival gang members at war.
When it was produced on Broadway, Brooks Atkinson in his 1957 revision New York Times calls the material "horrible". today's hearing was not "horrified". There was even some uncomfortable giggles to be heard in the audience during inappropriate moments. However, the hearing this afternoon was still deeply moved by production.
It was not until the final scene of Act I, the noise, it stopped me in this production. Part of this was due to some options poor quality between the Jets. Frankly, some of these children would be more threatening with a curler that with a switch blade. Another criticism refers to them as look, as if merely jumped out of a Gap commercial. Frankly, my analogy was more towards the "Mickey Mouse Club. Some of the seriousness of youth actors stood out as a sore thumb. The spots of "dirt" on their faces only served to give more parts of the production of a tone of amateurism. Who said that this division of the choreography of Jerome Robbins dances, magnificently recreated for this production by Joey McKneely with precision and energy.
Tony is played by Matt Cavenaugh, last seen in a season Attend Affair and Gray Gardens and Urban Cowboy, both from a couple of seasons ago. Cavenaugh sings songs with a pure voice that he unforced fleet. You do not buy their status until the end of the first act that way. From there it shines. Native Argentines role of Maria Josefina Scaglione. She has a beautiful voice, but never quite at the level of advertising and sometimes it was actually slightly out of tune. Despite some critical comments from others who felt it was more than the voice of his performance, I felt he handled herself as an actress was really beautiful and even more convincing when singing. The material that gave him more opportunities sufficient to win you over. "One Hand, One Heart" was delicate and passionate and "Somewhere" left with chills.
Karen Olivo as Anita tour of the show of force and emotional realism. Their fear is palpable in the scene of pharmacy with the Jets in the second act. She has a strong voice and a commanding presence. She is paired with Cody Green, who gives an excellent performance in the role of Riff.
Kudos to Arthur Laurents for adoption than one occasion, the presentation of sections of the show in Spanish (as translated by Lin In the Heights'-Manuel Miranda). I regret to say that does not work. It is distracting and irritating, especially when used extensively for the main plot of sensitive scenes and songs. The two numbers that are almost exclusively in Spanish are "I Feel Pretty" and "A Boy Like That". The latter was a particularly poor choice to throw in what I'm sure a large number of non-Spanish members of the Hispanic audience. Some of the attendees were children tonight I am sure who have never seen this show. Mr. Laurents makes their production and their work, doing a disservice this election. Any other director had tried to do that Thus, there could have been forgiven almost as easily as they can forgive Laurents (being the original author of the book).
The set, by Youmans James was minimal and unobtrusive. His scenario for noise in the final scene of an act was particularly effective and impressive.
The real star of this production the score by Leonard Bernstein and choreography by Jerome Robbins. The orchestra, with a full complement of violins and cellos is under the direction of Patrick Vaccariello. Hats off to the producers of this show to give the Bernstein score, the instrumentation you need, you got your money's worth. Looking around on the show tonight I saw a sea of young faces. How heartening to see the next generation to experience a true American classic in the repertory theater musical. This production deserves to run and if the audience tonight was any indication, it will do very well.
