Strange that John is a fact about which there was no doubt. I was looking awkward, clumsy, socially inept and of limited intelligence was also evident. John was in fifth when I met him. His mother had brought to the office because he was alarmed by their concern "with helicopters. Apparently, their teachers had expressed concern about John of the constant reference to the helicopter that was following him to school each day. They were also concerned because the comrades John at school were intolerant of him, sometimes verbally abusive to him and he "gave him" on numerous occasions, at one point encouraged him to sing the anthem national aloud during the prayer time at a meeting.
A friend of John at the school was Mr. O'Reilly, your English teacher. O'Reilly was a young boy who had just completed her teacher training last year. O'Reilly was a large family, born in rural Ireland was the most young and was adored by his mother and father. O'Reilly was a good and decent man who had seen the difficulties of life up close and in person. One of his brothers was imprisoned auto theft, a sister had moved to England after giving birth to her third child by his third partner (the other two children were fathered by each of its other two partners) and had an older brother, who spent years in a psychiatric hospital outside. As a result of this unusual, but the rich history and loving family, O'Reilly was sensitive and tolerant of difference. Of all the teachers in school is the only recognized something essentially good and decent about John.
My first impression of John was that he was unusually rare appearance. Tall and gangly, his face spattered with bad acne and teeth that seemed to stand out from all corners from his mouth, sat looking up into his chair. His mother introduced him saying he was shy and did not understand why he was there. Despite this recognition her shyness, John was willing to talk, he rose to greet me and shook my hand warmly. "Are you afraid of helicopters?" was his comment introduction to me. As we walked into the office to have a chat could not help noticing that John was constantly staring at the ceiling.
John spoke freely about their experiences in high school. He talked about the number of boys who laughed at him, who encouraged him to do things that really did not want do, like singing aloud during the prayer time. He spoke of his teachers, he said, he no longer cared to notice was in the room or leave as a slow learner. He cited several staff members who are kind and gentle and that out of his way to wish him good morning and ask about your family. "There are plenty of good teachers in my school. Some are a little annoyed right, but many are trying to do their job. It is not easy when many children are acting the larvae in the class. "While talking about their teachers and" … nice lady gives me a cup of tea in the room with their parents … "he started to mourn.
Through his tears, John began talking about O'Reilly. "This is the best teacher, he understands me. He told me if I'm in for help, the helicopter is out and I will not hear noises all the time. He even told me, and I have to say this, that has a brother who had a problem like mine and received help at a hospital. Do not tell anyone I told you please. "After further questioning it became clear that John was a teenager with schizophrenia. He had auditory hallucinations, thought he had a helicopter everywhere, even in school and was scared and anxious all the time.
John ended up in hospital, of course, was given the right medication and was hallucinating. On the fourth day, every week there was a bingo game. Each week O'Reilly came and visited John, play bingo with him. Prize One week was baseball cap New York Yankees, who had been on display all week before bingo. John loved the cover, she lived for her, it was all he could talk during the week. Even phoned Mr. O'Reilly, once with permission of course, and spoke of the CAP and how much they wanted to win at bingo. That week turned O'Reilly as usual. Throughout the game of bingo all John was said of the baseball cap. O'Reilly, John's thought should not be taking your medication!
John won the baseball cap that week. He was in a sea of tears walk to the bingo table to retrieve it. He looked as if made of solid gold. Walking back to his chair he had in his hands, looking at it. O'Reilly told him to put it. But John said, "No, they have it because I've always been good to me" and gave it to O'Reilly. O'Reilly is 35 now, with a family. He lost track of years ago, John. O'Reilly has a baseball cap with pride in his classroom and often referred very rare a child named John, who taught him a lesson about life and the importance of kindness.
